Mid Century Swedish Kilim by Ingegerd Silow

Ingegerd Silow was a 20th century Swedish visual artist who also designed kilims. Sweden has a long tradition of kilim weaving which reached its climax in the mid-20th century when a generation of designers and weavers produced kilims in abstract and geometric designs which were compatible with Scandinavian furniture and decoration. Silow was one of that generation.

This piece is interesting in several ways. Rather than geometric figures, the design appears to be a row of stylised butterflies. The colours are quite intense and vibrant whilst the small format suggests it may well have been woven specifically for a special space perhaps a hallway. Silow's monograph appears in the bottom right hand corner. In excellent condition and ready for immediate use. This piece would work equally well on a wall or on a floor.
