This whimsical and iconic coat stand is a design classic from the 1950s by French designer Roger Feraud. Known as the "Clé de Sol" or "Treble Clef," the freestanding piece is crafted from powder-coated iron with eight colorful wooden spheres. The spheres, painted in pairs of blue, yellow, green, and red, are arranged to create an "atomic" style. The design is completed with four "treble clef" shaped coat hooks at the top.
This sturdy and well-made piece is not only functional for hanging coats and hats and storing umbrellas in its base but is also a conversation starter. It is a perfect addition to a large hallway in a residential or office setting.
The coat stand is in very good vintage condition, though some marks on the wooden balls are noted. These could be repainted to suit your personal style.
Roger Feraud (1890–1964) was a prominent French furniture and object designer, celebrated for his imaginative mid-century creations. His coat racks, produced in the 1950s and 1960s, are particularly famous for their sleek lacquered metal frames and colourful wooden balls, which capture the decorative exuberance of the Atomic Age and Space Age design movements.
