This striking, vintage 1970s German wall mirror features a bevelled edge and is set within
a uniquely textured white acrylic frame, defined by a stepped, indented design around its perimeter. The backlighting feature allows light to softly disperse outwards, reflecting beautifully through the frame and around the mirror itself. While no manufacturer's mark or label is present on this specific piece, based on the sale of similar items in the past, it is confidently attributed to the esteemed manufacturer Hillebrand Leuchten.
The mirror's thoughtful design includes a circular glass center that screws easily into the frame, providing simple access for replacing lightbulbs. The frame accommodates four small screw-in Edison E14 lightbulbs, positioned at 90-degree angles to ensure even light distribution. Dimmable LED candle lightbulbs are recommended to achieve the desired effect.
The mirror is presented in very good vintage condition; the acrylic frame remains in perfect shape, while the mirror surface exhibits only minor, expected surface scratches consistent with its age. The mirror is in full working order. The wiring has been checked by a professional electrician.
The mirror would make a stunning addition to several rooms in a home. The soft, ambient light provides flattering illumination for grooming and helps prevent the mirror from steaming up, making it an excellent vanity choice for a bathroom. It could also enhance a bedroom as a unique decorative piece, or be placed in a dressing or vanity corner to add an elegant, luminous touch. When hung in an entrance hall or hallway, the mirror helps reflect light, creates an illusion of space in a smaller area, and provides a grand entrance. Lastly, in a living room, the indirect light works well as atmospheric or ambient lighting, and placing it on a feature wall or above a fireplace can create a striking focal point, adding depth to the room.
Hillebrand Leuchten, or the Egon Hillebrand light factory, was a renowned German lighting manufacturer. The company was established on May 15, 1881, in Neheim by Egon Hillebrand, initially producing household appliances and kerosene lamps before transitioning to electrical lighting fittings at the turn of the century. Hillebrand gained fame for its quality, innovative production, and notable designers like Egon Hillebrand, Heinz Pfaender, and Ernest Igl, receiving nine design awards between 1955 and 1982. Their products span various styles, from Art Deco in the early years to the classic Modernist style of the "Oslo" table lamp (1962). In the 1970s and 80s, the company was known for using luxurious and glamorous materials like brass, glass, and chrome to create distinctive designs, often referred to as "Space Age" style. The company closed in 1995, making its vintage products rare, collectible, and highly sought after today.
