A large and beautiful French late Victorian antique cut lead crystal glass inkwell with a silver-plated swirled patterned lid. The square inkwell features faceted glass with all edges chamfered at 45 degree angles including the corners. The base has 16 individual squares cut into it all at different sizes which is unusual. The silver plated lid and hinged collar has a wonderful swirled design. Some of the bronze is showing through where the silver-plate has worn away in time. The lid opens and closes easily but does show some age-related wear especially inside the lid where the metal has corroded. I don't think this detracts from the piece but adds to its provenance.
I can only feel one fleabite chip which isn’t visible to the eye just to the touch. The base squares show some age-related scratches where it's been placed on different surfaces over time. The inkwell will look wonderful as a decorative piece on any desk sideboard, shelf or coffee table especially on a sunny day when the sunlight shines through it.
