A striking pair of 1970s “Glacier” table lamps produced by Peill & Putzler, one of West Germany’s most respected art glass manufacturers of the mid-20th century. The design is a superb example of the sculptural lighting that emerged during the late modernist period, combining functional form with dramatic surface texture.
Each lamp features a heavy, mouth-blown clear glass body with a thick, faceted cube-like form. The glass is deeply textured with vertical striations and irregular organic ridges that evoke the appearance of cracked ice or glacial formations, a signature aesthetic often associated with the “Glacier” series. The uneven, crystalline surface captures and refracts light beautifully, creating dynamic highlights and shadow play whether illuminated or not. The tops are open and slightly irregular, emphasising the handcrafted quality of the glass. The substantial weight and thickness of the glass speaks of the high production standards for which the maker was known.
The geometric silhouette is balanced by the visual movement within the glass itself, giving the lamps both a Brutalist edge and a refined modern presence. When lit, the textured surfaces diffuse light into a warm, atmospheric glow, making them ideal as statement pieces in a living room, bedroom, or entryway. Their sculptural character allows them to function equally well as decorative art objects even when switched off.
Condition is consistent with their age, with minor wear typical of vintage examples. One lamp has two cracks on the same side but because of the thickness of the glass and iced design it almost looks like part of the design so much so I did not notice it when I bought them. Priced accordingly. The original manufacturer's clear plastic label is still present on one of the lamps, which further supports their authenticity.
Each table lamp requires a single Edison E14 lightbulb perhaps a LED candle bulb. Rewired and in full working order.
